United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called Tuesday for “all parties” to commit to the peace plan for Gaza presented by US President Donald Trump, a spokesman said.
“It is now crucial that all parties commit to an agreement and its implementation... He once again reiterates his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire,” Farhan Haq, a spokesman for Guterres, said in a statement.
Trump announced his plan after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. The Israeli leader has agreed to the plan, while Hamas has yet to respond.
Trump said the group has “three or four days” to respond, warning of "a very sad end" if it rejected the proposal that he said was close to ending the two-year-old conflict.
Speaking at a joint White House press conference following a meeting with Netanyahu, Trump said they were "beyond very close" to an elusive peace deal for Gaza. But he warned Hamas that Israel would have full US support to take whatever action it deemed necessary if it rejects what he has offered.
The White House released a 20-point document that called for an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament and a transitional government led by an international body.
