Recent geopolitical developments have revealed that oil remains a fundamental pillar of the global energy system, despite years of calls to reduce reliance on it and accelerate the transition to clean energy. Markets have proven that price fluctuations are often linked more to political and military risks than to actual supply shortages, which has reaffirmed the robustness of the global oil industry's structure and its ability to adapt to crises.
This reality is reinforced by the ongoing discovery of new fields, alongside expanding exploration activities in promising regions like the Arctic, which increases global reserves and confirms that oil resources will remain available for decades to come, even with the continued gradual shift towards low-emission energy sources.
The Strait of Hormuz crisis also demonstrated that the existence of large commercial and strategic inventories, coupled with diversified production sources and transportation networks, enabled markets to mitigate the effects of navigation disruptions, despite the Strait's importance as a passage for about one-fifth of global oil trade.
For instance, the rapid rise in oil prices from approximately $70 to about $110 per barrel had no relation to oil supply shortages. Events flared up in one of the most crucial global passages for the oil industry (the Strait of Hormuz), through which approximately 20 percent or one-third of the world's oil ordinarily passes daily. Yet, despite the obstacles and navigation halts affecting the "Strait," it was still possible to meet demand in many petroleum-consuming countries.
One of the primary reasons for the industry's ability to continue and interact with global markets, despite navigation disruptions or halts in the Strait, lies in the widespread expansion of commercial storage facilities for most major international companies, and the strategic storage of industrial countries that are members of the International Energy Agency, which requires these two types of inventories to meet several months of future demand for member nations.
Furthermore, the global oil industry has become more interconnected and integrated than ever before, which has bolstered its ability to adapt to geopolitical disruptions.
China, the world's largest oil importer, relies primarily on supplies from GCC countries, Iraq, and Iran, a significant portion of which passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, China continued to meet its oil needs during periods of tension, benefiting from commercial and strategic inventories, oil stored in offshore storage centers belonging to Gulf national oil companies, as well as diversifying import sources, including American and Venezuelan crude transported via the Pacific Ocean.
Some countries also rely on the sustainable energy capacities they have established, which reduces their oil consumption.
Global energy demand is expected to continue its growth in the coming decades, driven by population increase, improved living standards, and industrial expansion, particularly in emerging economies. This continuous growth necessitates increased production to meet rising demand, in parallel with continued investment in sustainable energy sources, thereby achieving a balance between supply security and the requirements of energy transition.
Furthermore, energy demand patterns are undergoing a significant transformation with the emergence of new consumption-intensive sectors. The boom in artificial intelligence applications has driven major technology companies to seek stable and low-emission electricity sources, including reliance on small nuclear reactors to power data centers. Therefore, the future of energy does not appear to be based on replacing oil with a single source, but rather on a balanced mix that combines oil, gas, nuclear, and renewable energy. The energy transition does not signify the end of the oil era, but rather a redefinition of its role within a more diverse and sustainable system.
